Beneath the Ruins by Maddie Grills
Maddie Grills is a Los Angeles-based media composer and vocal arranger. In July 2023, she received her Masters of Music in Film Music Composition at the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in partnership with the Seattle Film Institute. Studying under Hummie Mann, she worked as a composer on several student films with both live and remote recording sessions and rounded out the year by composing, orchestrating, and conducting for a 52-piece orchestra.
About the piece: This composition is marked by its beautiful orchestration and clean textures. The work reflects a mature approach to composition, with a refined sense of harmony and structure. It is a thoughtful and well-crafted piece that has been selected for its strong musical qualities.
Beneath the Ruins will be performed at our Fall Concert on November 17, 2024.
In Transit by Andrew Strawn
Andrew Strawn is an established young composer whose talent and dedication has already gained attention and respect within the musical community. His music is known for its romantic expression and highly polished orchestration, with topics often drawn from visual art and literature. He currently studies music composition at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) with Douglas Knehans, Michael Fiday, and Ellen Harrison; and saxophone performance with James Bunte and Carly Hood.
About the piece: In Transit takes listeners on a journey, effectively capturing the essence of travel through its structured and evocative composition. The piece's ability to convey a sense of movement and adventure makes it a strong and fitting choice for our ensemble.
In Transit will be performed at our Spring Concert in April 2025.
